The Crown of Thorns: A Mockery Turned Majesty

“And they plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head…”
Matthew 27:29

When Roman soldiers pressed a crown of thorns onto the head of Jesus, they mocked Him as “King of the Jews.” They didn’t know they were crowning the true King of all creation.

This cruel act was not just physical torment—it was layered with bitter irony and prophetic significance.

✝️ What Does the Crown of Thorns Mean?

1. Mockery of His Kingship
The Roman soldiers dressed Him in a purple robe, bowed in mock reverence, and gave Him a reed for a scepter. Yet in their sarcasm, they accidentally revealed the truth: Jesus is King.

2. Symbol of the Curse
Thorns are a direct result of the fall:

“Cursed is the ground for thy sake… thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth…”
— Genesis 3:17–18

Jesus wore the very sign of the curse—thorns—on His brow as He bore the full weight of humanity’s sin. He didn't just carry the curse; He became the curse for us (Galatians 3:13).

3. Foreshadowing of His Glorification
The suffering crown came before the heavenly crown.
Jesus humbled Himself even to the point of death, and because of this, “God hath highly exalted Him” (Philippians 2:9).
The crown of thorns will one day be replaced by many crowns (Revelation 19:12).

The Wages of Sin

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

We all know this, we all die, however with that sin comes a lot of pain, misery and ignorance. Satan's main objective was to get us to forget the commands of our God and he has done that quite well. However, you may find this interesting as I have.

Noah

Noah is described as a righteous man along with his father Lamech and grandfather Methuselah. One of the insights we have of this is not just that the Bible calls him righteous but when he loaded the Ark with the animals. He knew the unclean from the clean animals. Remember this was way before Moses or even Abraham existed. So evidently what made these men righteous is the observations of God's commands which became all but lost when Moses and the Israelites appeared on the scene.

And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. Genesis 8:20

And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him. Genesis 7:5

What Did The Crown of Thorns Look Like

Now let's examine what the crown of thorns liked like. So many times in history we are shown this flimsy little crown of thorns. However, when we examine the Shroud of Turin we get insight into what this crown might of looked like. It appears from the Shroud that is was a cap or helmet like in nature. The thorns piercing the crown of His head.

What The Romans Did Not Know

The Romans did not actually know what they were doing in regards to the crown of thorns. But we remember that God cursed the land and it brought forth thorns which were part of the curse for men. Yes He took on the curse, the pain and the torture for us in a sinless body, a perfect sacrifice so that we may be made whole again. Just like sin and disobedience entered the world through the thoughts of Lucifer, Adam and Eve, our thoughts and obedience to God's Commands with Yeshua's perfect sacrifice can erase this curse.

The Life Is In The Blood

We are told, the life is in the Blood. Interesting that a person can live without any organ, but they cannot live without blood. The blood of Adam and Eve run through our veins to this very day. It is also interesting that a baby gets their blood from their father and we all know that Yeshua was born of a virgin. So no sinful blood was transferred to Him in order for His blood to be the perfect sacrifice.

For the life of the flesh [is] in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it [is] the blood [that] maketh an atonement for the soul. Leviticus 17:11

A Call to the Elect

For the remnant in these last days, the image of Jesus wearing a crown of thorns is not weakness—it is strength.
It reminds us that true kingship is marked by suffering, and true glory is found in obedience to the Father, no matter the cost. Let us keep God's commandments and let Him know that we are thankful and appreciative for what He has done. Do not trust in our own understanding but observe the laws of God by wearing tassels on our garments.
